Anywho...I've heard of this brand Upton's for awhile but it just floated through my mind like many of the new vegan brands out there. Some are great and stick around forever, some are gone before you could even figure out how to pronounce their name. It would take me weeks to go through this blog and delete all the vegan products that no longer exist. But I hope that Upton's Bacon Seitan is never one those. Because for the first time ever, I have fallen in love with a faux bacon. For those transitioning to a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle and are more familiar with pork bacon than I am I will add a disclaimer now, I cannot attest to whether or not this actually taste like bacon. Although, in some ways it reminds me of turkey bacon, but it's been nearly 15 years since I had turkey bacon (see, when you throw out number like that you just sound plain old!) What I can tell you is that I love this stuff. My mind is blown, my heart is full of joy and my wallet is about to be lighter because I'm heading back to the Whole Foods where I found this stuff and buying a case today. Our Whole Foods back in Atlanta doesn't carry this box of happiness and I'm not taking any chances. This stuff is going on the plane with me.

Plum Genius!
As a vegan mom I get asked constantly if my daughter is vegan or if I'm raising her vegan. I always answer proudly yes! I know many vegan mom's get bombarded with the "so, is that healthy" question but thankfully, being a pediatric dietitian has it perks in that not too many people ask me silly questions when it comes to my child's health. Although I do get the occasional "where do she get her protein" or "how do you handle that at school" as if brown-bag lunches were just invented this decade. But I digress. The funny thing is that there are a plethora of vegan, ready to eat, quick on the go options for vegan kids. The grocery store is swimming with them.
One of my favorite vegan-friendly companies is Plum Organics. I've seen their products every where from Target and Kroger to the Piggly Wiggly (no lie). Here's a list of all of Plum Organics vegan offerings for little ones. We skipped the purees and never did the whole baby food thing but I can attest that their Little Cremes and Crunch O'Las are tasty for both kids and adults.

It's Time To Let Your Inner Hippie Out For A Walk
So...I thought with my post about the Shea Moisture line of products that I was coming out as a full blown hippie. But as it turns out, there is a lot more where that came from! So I'm an "extended" breastfeeding, cloth-diapering, cloth wipes, oil instead of lotion, gardening, pesticide free, natural hair kinda girl. I admit to all of that. But somehow I thought all these things made me immune to being a hippie. I even bought my daughter shoes made out of burlap, I should have known then that I had fallen down a deep dark path and am just 1 step away from moving to a commune at this point.
I guess, now that I'm a mom I can call myself an "Eco-Mom" or "Green-Mom". That sounds a lot more young and cool than "hippie." But now I've taken the final plunge. When my free and clear laundry detergent finally ran out this week I looked at the tin of Nellie's Laundry Soap that I've been using for almost 2 years now on my daughter's cloth diapers and thought - why don't I just use that? Why the thought hadn't occurred to me earlier I will never know. Each tiny tin of Nellie's is enough to clean 100 large loads of clothes with just a tablespoon of detergent. I took a sneak peak at my clothes during the wash cycle to see if this stuff really worked and if any dirt was coming out of them at all. To my surprise there was not only dirt and grime floating in the churning water but an shiny film that almost appeared to be oily. I got on the internet and started searching. As it turns out my old free and clear detergent wasn't that free and clear at all. It contained something called optical brighteners and additive to make my clothes look brighter. This stuff was actually embedded into every little fiber of my clothes and my families clothes. The optical brighteners were the shiny swirls I saw floating around with the dirt and grime released from my clothes. And the thing is, after their first wash with Nellie's my clothes actually looked cleaner, smelled cleaner and had a different texture to them. In one wash with Nellie's Laundry Soap my clothes were freed of all the chemicals that had been building up on them wash after wash. I can't believe I was washing my kids clothes in that stuff! I feel so duped by ever being convinced that those free and clear detergents were actually natural.
So call me a Green Mom, Eco Mom, Hippie or one of my friend's new words for me a Bippie (black-hippie). I'll gladly take on any of those titles. My life has been transformed because of them and it feels so good!

Here I Go...Eating Cookies Again
Social media has helped me learn one important thing about myself, I'm an emotional eater and my food of choice is sweets. I realized that at one point nearly everyone of my tweets and Facebook post had something to do with a cupcake, cookie or confection of some sort. In all fairness I have been pregnant and/or nursing for the better part of 3 years now and burning calories like a madwoman so for the longest time these little indiscretions made no impact on my weight. Well...my daughter has slowed down on nursing and those 600+ calories a day I used to burn breastfeeding are no longer there to help me when I decide that 3 cupcakes for breakfast is a good option because "I deserve it." And frankly, I do deserve it. Running a non-profit, writing, and mothering this is all really hard high-stress work! But I made a vow to myself to have a little more self-control when it comes to the baked goods and stuff an apple in my mouth when I really want a vegan milkshake.
Everything was going great until I was contacted by Isabella's Cookie Company to try some of their vegan cookies. Who can turn down free cookies?! Well, not me. They shipped me out their Red Velvet and Ginger Molasses flavored cookies the next day. I figured that these would be no great temptation. Store-bought cookies shipped across the country don't exactly scream "moist and delicious." They actually sat on my counter for 2 weeks before I tried them. See, I do have will power. But on a whim I opened up the Red Velvet's one day and to my surprise they were fantastic. Soft, moist and rich. Nothing that I expected them to be. The Ginger Molasses cookies were equally good. I was able to hold on to the cookies for an additional week and they remained moist and soft.
My daughter found these lurking in my purse one day and all I came back to find was a empty plastic bag with a red velvet cookie crumb trail. So much for our "only one cookie a quarter" rule. I have to get better at hiding my stash!

GROWING WAISTLINE ALERT!!! You're about to eat a tub of cookie dough
The Whole Foods in my neighborhood is like Costco on Sunday's. If you've never been to a Costco on a Sunday afternoon it is aisle after aisle after aisle of free samples. My Whole Foods is like this at least 3 days out of any given week. Heck, they even used to have a DJ on Saturday's to really get the food party going. I don't allow my daughter to have many sweets. A cookie a quarter and cupcakes on birthday's only is pretty much how we roll - yep, I'm the sugar police. So I slyly tried Eat Pastry's Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Dough (baked into delicious cookies of course) while she nibbled on some watermelon and grapes. Ahhh fruit, nature's candy.
As soon as the cookie hit my lips I said "Oh no, this is too dangerous." I knew if I were to buy this tub of cookie dough that within minutes it would be deep in my stomach and I would have no regrets about it. These cookies are made in a dedicated Vegan Facility and are made of really wholesome ingredients. They had my heart when I turned over to look at the ingredients and I saw they use Earth Balance Margarine in their dough - oh how I love Earth Balance! Eat Pastry's flavor options include the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie (which I ended up buying and eating all of), Chocolate Chip (regular, gluten free and double chocolate), Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Gluten-Free Snickerdoodles, and Gluten Free Sugar Momma's. When my sweet little girl asked nicely for a bite of one of my cookies as I binged out on 6 while hiding in a closet so she wouldn't see me (yes, I'm a closet cookie eater, literally) I bent the rules a little and let her try one little bite. Of course, she loved it, it's a cookie isn't it?

Viva La Vegan Snack Box!
The first time I heard about Vegan Cuts was through an email I received from them about trying out Brooklyn Dark Chocolate. If you haven't read the review yet, let me just summarize it by saying if my house was on fire I would grab my daughter, my dog, and then this chocolate (in that order). Oh...and then I would probably call the fire department. Thankfully, my house is standing lovely in one piece, fire free so I have the opportunity to try one more amazing item from Vegan Cuts. Well, in truth, it's more like a dozen more items from Vegan Cuts all wrapped up into one. It's their Vegan Snack Box.
When I heard about the snack box it struck me as such a phenomenal idea I can't believe no one has thought of it to this point. When my snack box arrived at my door. I was giddy with excitement. I opened the box to find a cornucopia of vegan goodies that I literally had never seen before in my life - coconut chips (made from dehydrated coconut meat), lentil chips, lots of chocolate in various forms, gummy candy, hemp based lip balm, 3 different varieties of tea and a protein bar. Being the guineapig that I am I love the idea of having the opportunity to try lots of different products without having to commit to buying the entire pack of something. I wasn't particularly keen on the protein bar that was in my snack box and I'm glad that I didn't have to buy an entire box of them to find out I didn't like them. In contrast I absolutely loved everything else in the box. The tea was a surprise favorite as it comes in this cute little cylinder pouch that travels well and looks much cooler to pull out your purse (or man-bag) than a tea bag.
Another big advantage of the box is that, as a mom, I'm always looking for great snack options for my kiddo. She usually snacks on fruits, roasted chickpeas and some type of homemade muffin or cracker that I've made or marinated tofu but, homemade goodies don't exactly travel well and I'm over carrying around a cooler just to ensure she has organic homemade crackers and strawberries when we're on the road (can you tell I'm a first time mom?) So this box is a god-send. She devoured the coconut chips and the lentil chips are a new favorite too. She even had a few sips of my chamomile tea but the chocolate and gummies are for mommy only :) As of today, yep as of right now this moment, I am a subscriber to the Vegan Cuts Snack Box. It's only $19.95 a month and that includes shipping. Viva La Vegan Snack Box!

The Magic of the Madras Simmer Sauce
Before
I became a mother my life was impossibly crazy - working, going to school
full-time (for 2 degrees at once), interning, writing books, maintaining two
blogs and trying to preserve my sanity with zero time left for myself at the end
of the day. Cooking has always been a way for me to release stress at the end
of a busy day so making quick and easy meals became my obsession - and helped
me create 3 phenomenal cookbooks
, if I do say so myself J. After I had my daughter
all the things that made my life crazy were still in place but now there is a
tiny person who my whole world revolves around. When she started eating solids
it was an easy transition, she just ate whatever I ate – never any pureed,
smashed or mushy foods just full, bold flavors and lots of variety. In the last
3 months she went from dabbling in food to eating portions that rival my own
and suddenly I found myself stressed out about dinner time. When it was just me
I could grab some Taco Bell on the way home and call it dinner, or graze on
snacks all night long while finishing up homework or writing a new chapter. But
now, I have to have a wholesome, nutritious, home cooked meal on the
table every night and the pressure of the “have to” can make life crazy
sometimes.
Thankfully,
I’m starting to find a balance. Cooking double portions of everything and
freezing half for the times when I just have no time to cook has been a life
saver. My other secret to stress free cooking is a good store-bought simmer
sauce. I have a growing list of favorites which I will share over the coming
year – all low sodium, no crazy scientific ingredients and full of flavor. With
a good simmer sauce you simply throw whatever protein and/or vegetables you
have hanging out in your freezer or fridge in a pan, sauté them with a little
oil, add the sauce and voila! You have a home cooked meal.
Last
night’s simmer sauce of choice was Seeds of Change Organic Madras Simmer Sauce
.
It was surprisingly difficult to find a vegan Indian simmer sauce. Many of them
have some form of dairy in them but this one is a pure simple sauce. Just
tomatoes, onions, and a laundry list of spices. And that’s it, no other crazy
ingredients or preservatives. The label says it is a “red hot curry” so I was a
little worried it might be too spicy for my little one but it actually doesn’t
have much heat at all. So if you’re looking for a spicy sauce you might want to
add a pinch of red pepper flakes to it. I sautéed a bag of Garden chik’n
strips, frozen broccoli and frozen peas together in a large sauce pan with
canola oil, poured the sauce over everything and stirred until it was warmed
through and then spooned it over a bed of brown basmati rice. Pure heaven! And
my little one gobbled it up! In fact, she ate more of it than I did. You can
find the Seeds of Change simmer sauce down the “ethnic” (I hate that word) or international
food aisle.

Product Review: EZ Tofu Press
Back
in 2009 I did a review of the TofuXpress a product that has changed the way I eat
tofu and prepare tofu and one that I truly love. But the TofuXpress had and
still has one big problem - its price tag. At $41.95 (nearly $50 with shipping
and handling) it hits the wallet pretty hard for just pressing water out of
tofu, no matter how great of a job it does at it. It’s been nearly 4 years and
nothing new has made its way to the market to compete with the TofuXpress until
now.
Last
year the EZ Tofu Press
was introduced as an alternative. Instead of a spring
loaded system like TofuXpress the EZ Tofu Press is two plates anchored by two
large screws and bolts. You simply place your tofu in between the two plates
and adjust the sides to the tension you desire slowly to press the water out of
the tofu. It comes with instructions, that can explain it better than I ever
could (and frankly that I didn’t read past the first few lines). I’m going to
be honest with you. To me, something like a tofu press should be intuitive to
use. And when I opened the box it was about 30 minutes until dinner time and I
just needed to get this tofu pressed, cubed and into the oven quickly so
reading through the directions was unappealing to me. Besides, how hard could
it be to press tofu between two plates? After the first time I used it I
noticed that my tofu was not pressed to a firm, nicely textured block like I’m
used to with the TofuXpress. Instead only a little water was pressed out the
tofu and there were cracks in it from the tension of the plates. Also, my block
was uneven because I was in a hurry and didn’t take the time to make sure that
each side was precisely screwed down the same. By this time my directions were
already in the recycling bin so I shot myself in the foot on this one!
On
my second try, I had a bit more time and took care to make sure the sides were
even and increase the tension slowly. I decided to try to do a side by side
comparison of the amount of water removed from each type of tofu press. With
the TofuXpress I was able to get out ½ cup of water from a block of firm tofu
(who knew there was that much water in tofu!) From the EZ Tofu Press I was able
to get out ¼ cup. Once again, I’m sure if I took the time and read through the
directions thoroughly and used the little ruler they enclose in the package I
would have gotten similar results to the TofuXpress. My impatience is probably
the biggest flaw of the EZ Tofu Press. I’ve gotten used to just plopping my
tofu into the TofuXpress, snapping on the top and walking away. Also, I’m not a
fan of having to let the tofu drain over a plate or the sink, it’s just one
more thing for me to clean up and with a 14 month old running around the house I need every second I can squeeze out
of the day. BUT…the fact is the EZ Tofu Press is only $26.99 and if you have an
amazon prime account shipping is free. That makes the EZ Tofu Press half the
price of the TofuXpress, which makes a huge difference. Overall, it’s hard for
me to say one is truly better than the other. I have my personal preference
between the two but the list of pros and cons with both is equally long. If it’s
ease you’re looking for and you have a little extra money lying around then the
TofuXpress is for you, if you don’t mind taking a little extra time to get
everything right and save about $25 then the EZ Tofu Press is for you. Either
way you really can’t go wrong!

New Product Review: Calnaturale Svelte
I love a good grab and go shake or drink, especially one that requires no mixing, is high in protein and is a good source of calcium, vitamin D and the all important vitamin B12. Calnaturale's new line of on the go shakes have all this and more! Unfortuantely, this will be a very short review because Calnaturale Svelte shakes include one thing that I cannot stand in a shake, drink or anything else that I taste - stevia.
I wanted to love these portable nutrition powerhouses so much but I couldn't get past 2-3 sips without gagging and finally throwing every flavor I had out. I truly don't blame the company but my own taste buds. I absolutely abhor stevia in every way shape and form. I've tried my best to like products it contains and do this to cover up it's horrific taste but to no avail.
However, if you like stevia I think these drinks might be perfect for you. As I said before, they are nutritional powerhouses filled will all the good stuff a heatlhy vegan needs (inlcluding zinc, vitamin B12, calclium, vitamin D, riboflavin and protein) with only 260 calories for a 16 ounce bottle. If anyone out there has tried this product and absolutely loves it please let me know! I'd love to hear the perspective of someone who loves stevia because I truly believe you would love this product too!

New Product Review: Vega Energizing Smoothies
After years of trying to figure out why I find all Vega products completely repulsive (after spending well over $300 trying to like them over the years). I finally figured it out as I was writing the review for Calnaturale Svelte. It's the stevia!
Back when I first tried Vega back in 2006, I'd never heard of stevia so I wasn't sure of what that awful taste was that I just couldn't get out my mouth. But now I know! Geesh - why won't these companies just use sugar! Urgh. Anywho. The kind folks at Vega sent me samples of their new Vega Energizing smoothies a couple months ago.
It took me nearly 4 weeks to muster up the courage to try one of them. I already knew I was going to hate it but, as your guineapig, I am sworn to try it! As with all Vega products, I've always tried them wanting to like them so badly - mostly because I needed it to be worth the money (this stuff is not cheap) and two because they are usually full of lots of healthy stuff.
One serving of Vega Energizing Smoothie features
•Two servings of veggies
•10 g of complete, plant-based protein
•5 g of fiber
•1 g of Omega-3
The back of the package always says "just add water and go" but seriously, have the makers ever tried this stuff with just water? That's just inhumane! I decided to try the tropical tango flavor with a big glass of mango/orange juice one morning while rushing out the door to get to a rotation on time. Before I knew it the smoothie was gone, I was at my rotation and my day was humming along until I realized - "OMG (yep, i said OMG), did I just finish an entire Vega smoothie? And dare I say did I like it?!" The answer to both questions is YES!YES! YES! Finally, a Vega product that I like, even with the addition of stevia this stuff was still amazing. The natural sweetness of the juice was enough to counteract the bitterness of the stevia for me. To make sure this wasn't a fluke I tried the Bodacious Berry with the same combo of juices and it was equally delicious. I went out and bought both flavors and stocked my pantry.
Since the first two flavors were so good I just knew the rest would be slam dunks. Unfortunately, they were not. That horrible bitter stevia taste came through loud and clear and I immediately spit out each subsequent flavor. I have a feeling if you like stevia then you would be ok with the flavor. So if you've had any of the other flavors and like them please leave a comment here and share your experience with the VGP readers! Even thought the other flavors weren't hits in my book the fact that I was able to fall in love with two Vega flavors in nothing short of a miracle so all in all, no complaints over here!

Brooklyn Dark Chocolate - You are one chocolate away from a happier day!
I am not inherently a chocolate lover. I idolized my mom growing up and she hated chocolate so I steered clear as well. Add the fact that we weren't allowed many sweets growing up and you can draw a clear picture of me eating grape nuts and nibbling on raisins instead of candy as a child. It took me 3 decades but I have finally learned to enjoy the pleasures of a well crafted bar of dark chocolate. When the opportunity came along to sample Brooklyn Dark's line of 63% cacao dark chocolate I jumped at the chance. With flavors like Moroccan spice, Classic hemp, Open Sesame, and Orange Silk who could say no?
Since I was never a chocolate lover who craved chocolate morning, noon and night I've always been more reserved when it comes to eating dark chocolate. Two little squares once a week or so is enough to keep me happy. On the back of each bar of Brooklyn Dark it says "You are one chocolate away from a happier day" to which I said out loud to myself "we'll see about that!" as I unwrapped the bar of Moroccan spice and broke off two squares. I cannot describe the perfection that is Brooklyn Dark chocolate. The Morrocan Spice flavor is everything chocolate should be, its velvety and warm but at the same time savory with hints of cumin, coriander, vanilla and black pepper. It taste like the best Moroccan sauce you have ever had in your life. It immediately fills the senses without overloading them.
Next up I tried the classic hemp, which is just that - a classic dark chocolate bar. Although it has hemp in it (all Brooklyn Dark flavors do) you don't notice it at all. Its just a perfect rich bar of chocolate. The sweet citrus taste of Orange Silk snuck up on me. First I tasted the bits of dried cranberries and the slight crunch of the sunflower seeds and then just as I was about to type "can't taste the orange at all" a subtle burst of orange filled my mouth with a taste reminiscent of orange liqueur.
By now we all know that small amount of dark chocolate in the diet can be beneficial to our health - it's full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, improves cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and recent studies have shown in might in improve cognitive impairments . Add to that the power of hemp seeds, which are a rich source of essential fatty acids and, dare I say it, these bars are down right good for you!
Since I mozy through eating chocolate at a snails pace it will likely me months before I finish the three bars I've opened and move on to the last flavor (sesame seed) but when I do I'll be certain to update this blog to let you know what I think!
You can find Brooklyn Dark Chocolate at VeganCuts.com on the Brooklyn Dark website and at these fine stores

Put Your Top On! (Healthy Top)
Have you ever seen those ultra-expensive gourmet whipped creamed canisters
that turns whipping cream into whipped cream with a touch of a button? I'm a bit obsessed with them but for over $100 I'm stuck making whipped cream the old fashioned way. Well not completely and totally the old fashioned way - I'm not about to sit over a chilled bowl with a whisk for 20 minutes but I will break out my kitchen aid mixer and a chilled bowl. For the longest time the only vegan option for homemade whipped cream was soy based but as of last year Mimic Creme came up with a soy-free, gluten-free almond and cashew based whipping cream called Healthy Top that I love!
Each 16 ounce container makes about 4 cups of whipped cream and the calorie count isn't horrific either. I used this yummy fluffy cream to make the Agave Whipped Cream in my Flax Seeds Waffles with Agave Cream recipe (pictured below) from Quick and Easy Low-Cal Vegan Comfort Food
. I'm starting to see this stuff pop-up everywhere from health food stores to your run of the mill conventional grocery stores and, of course, you can always fine it online.

Convenience Food Alert! Harmony Valley Foods Hamburger & Sausage Mix
I love quick and easy vegan products that don't require refrigeration. I have the bad habit of over-shopping and my fridge is constantly packed with food that often ends up going to the rabbit, dog or compost bin to ensure it doesn't go completely to waste. So shelf-stable products are always a plus to have around. Harmony Valley
foods makes a line of shelf-stable vegan hamburger and sausage mix that make approximately a pound of hamburger or sausage style crumbles by just adding water. Not only are they convenient from a storage stand point but they are great to travel with if you're not sure that there will be vegan options when traveling to visit friends or family. All you have to do is add water and wait 15 minutes then season as you'd like.
I was addicited to the sausage mix for a long time and then one day, I just stopped liking the flavor. I don't know what happened. It just started tasting tangy in an off sort of way. I don't know if it was just flavor overload or if the product loses some of it's flavor over time. But I would recommend that if you try this product to eat it all at once just in case. Another quick note, Harmony Valley also happens to be the name of a beef factory farm so be specific when you google this stuff. Until then, happy cooking!

Snack On This! The New Blueberry Hemp Power Snack
A couple months ago I got an email asking if I would like to try the latest "superfood" by Navitas Naturals. It had all the buzzwords of the moment - blueberry, hemp, superfood, gluten free, no refined sugars the whole nine. The word "superfood" is a huge turn off to me but I thought "what they hey, why not" and I decided to give it a try. The official name of the product is Blueberry Hemp Superood Power Snack
(now that's a mouthful). They are bite size snacks (about the size of one of those fun size Snickers bars) and if anything were to ever look like what non-vegans think vegans eat this would be it. They are brownish-purplish little bars dotted with all sorts of seeds. The ingredients on the back just sound like it should be good for you - organic camu camu powder, organic lucuma powder, organic maca powder, organic chia seeds, the list goes on! I have no clue what most of that stuff is but I assume they're supposed to be...well...superfoods. I could go on and on describing these things but let's just say this, think of every buzzword for every healthy thing you could imagine and it's in this stuff.
I carried them around in my purse for a week then one day, while sitting in my pediatric nutrition class, I decided to give them a try. Everyone around me was slightly intrigued and slightly horrified by their appearance but, after one bite I had to admit, these things are darn delicious. I mean, really really good. They are super sweet without being high in sugar (sweetened by dates), have a great blueberry flavor and a little crunch thanks to the sesame seeds. As far as all the other fancy ingredients on the label, it's nice they are there but the flavors that really come through are the dates, sunflowers and blueberries. I have to say, these are one of the best on the go snacks I've tasted in awhile and they are also incredibly filling so a little goes a long way. I highly recommend these little snacks.

Match Meats Vegan Crab Meat
Although I’ve never actually had a crab cake made of actual crab I am a sucker for a good tempeh cake with a little tartar sauce or a spicy remoulade. I’ve generally steered clear of vegan crab meat as the thought of handling something that was remotely crab like kinda grossed me out plus why go out and buy expensive mock products when tempeh is just a couple bucks and readily available?
Somehow, while veganizing Paula Deen recipes for my blog The Lady and Seitan I found myself with a need for mock crab meat, on more than one occasion. So it was time to bite the bullet and order this strange beige stuff. I was surprised at how nutrient rich and high in protein Match Meats Mock Crab meat is. I was also surprised that immediately upon opening it my entire kitchen smelled like the Fisherman's Wharf in San Fransico. Every dish I've used this stuff in from my own impromptu crab cakes and She Crab soup to Paula Deen's Chesapeake Bay Crab Cakes have turned out phenomenal with a great, chewy texture and, what I assume, is a crabby flavor. Match Meat's Mock Crab Meat is now I staple item that I keep in my fridge just in case since it cooks up quickly and really hits the spot. However, the smell alone makes me think not once, not twice but thrice before making anything with it. I only cook with it on warm days when there is a great little breeze going outside so I can open my windows, light a candle and let the scent waft out the house.

Quorn's New Vegan Burger
There's a fungus among us - and it is damn tasty. When the folks at Quorn contacted me about their new vegan burger I was over the moon with excitement. Their products have always looked soooo yum-tastic but none of them are vegan. Finally Quorn heard to pleads of its vegan audience and came out with a vegan burger. But not just any vegan burger, a smoky, savory, meaty vegan burger that is completely soy-free! New vegan meat analogs pop up in the market nearly everyday but it is very rare that a soy-free product enters the market and I couldn't be more excited. Don't get me wrong, I love soy but honestly, it seems like every commercial vegan product is made of it!
Like most veggie burgers these patties can be cooked in the oven, microwave, grill or stovetop. After trying all four methods I think the stovetop method is my favorite hands down and produces the most juicy burger. I love these burgers so much that I want to make sure that you guys get a taste of these new treats as well so I'm doing a little giveaway. When I 1000 "likes" on facebook I'll give away 3 free quorn products to 3 of my facebook followers. Just head on over to facebook, hit the like button and I'll announce the winners the moment we hit 1000!

Breakfast Lifesaver! Amy's Tofu Scramble in a Pocket Sandwich
I'm not a morning person. Not even a little. Getting up at 9am is my idea of getting up early. But now that I have a little girl my schedule has been turned upside down and I find myself getting up before sunrise to get ready for the day. Between getting myself ready, my daughter ready and heading out the door on time breakfast has slowly shrunk lower and lower on the priority list. But as a breastfeeding mom skipping out on any meal isn't an option. I love making tofu scramble breakfast burritos but that requires me getting up even earlier to make tofu scramble every morning which also isn't happening these days.
I've always been very skeptical of store-bought tofu scramble, especially frozen scrambles. They never looked that appetizing and the few that I have tried have been bland and pasty. When it comes to Amy's brand products things have been hit or miss for me. I love their enchiladas, hate their breakfast burritos. Love their black bean burritos but hate their soups and the list goes on and on. When I saw these breakfast pockets I was desperate and willing to try anything. I threw a pocket in the microwave as I was headed out the door with my daughter on my hip and was surprised that it was amazing! The pocket was a little gummy but the scramble was dead-on and delicious. The next day I decided to pop the pocket in the oven while I got ready, 30 minutes later the car was packed, we were ready to head out the door. I grabbed the scramble pocket out the oven and headed out the door. The gummyness of the pocket was gone and it was divine. My only complaint is the size. It's super yummy but also super small. It really takes two and some orange juice to fill you up. But size aside, this is absolutely perfect. And if you have kids this would be the perfect size for a breakfast on the go!

So Pricey Yet So Delicious Greek Style Coconut Milk Yogurt
A belated happy new year to all of my wonderful readers! I have had a fantastic hiatus from blogging taking care of my new baby girl and am finally getting a chance to return to both my blogs and share great recipes and reviews with you again.
First up is So Delicious brand Greek Style Coconut Milk Yogurt. If you've made it past the title of my review on So Delicious Coconut Milk traditional style yogurt then you know I love this stuff but, years later, I'm still debating if it's worth the pricetag and that's where I find myself with this new greek style yogurt. I've never had cow's milk greek yogurt (and never will) so I have nothing to compare this to as far as it's authenticity to being a true greek style yogurt. I can say that I have tried all the flavors that my Whole Foods had on the shelf and with every flavor I didn't so much as taste the fruit that was flavored them but a tartness that permeated through every spoonful. It wasn't an awful tartness, just a tartness. And the tartness didn't stop me from eating it. I'm just assuming that greek yogurts are more tart than traditional styles. What I love about this new greek style yogurt is that it is really high in fiber (8 grams), lower in sugar than the traditional style, and also has the good stuff like calcium, vitamin D, and B 12 without being high in fat.
Of course, at $2 a cup this won't be something I eat everyday, or even every month. I wish the price would come down on both lines of So Delicious coconut milk yogurt. I would eat this stuff everyday if it did. But $2 for 6 ounces of yogurt is just ridiculous. It cost me more to buy the 4 flavors of yogurt that were available at my Whole Foods than to eat a full meal at my favorite restaurant. That being said, if you happen to win the lotto in the next couple of weeks So Delicious Greek Style Coconut Milk Yogurt is a great investment, if not then I'd say give it a try if it's ever on sale or there's a coupon.

Royal Harvest Flavored Flax Oils
A little over a year ago, by happenstance, I found myself having lunch with a man that had been vegan for 30 years. I picked his brain about the evolution of the vegan diet from the whole foods diet (which was all that was available when he went vegan) to the tower of processed foods that are now staples in many diets. The conversation was absolutely fascinating and as he got up to leave he turned and gave me one word of caution "don't forget your fatty acids or you will pay the consequences to your heart health later. I wish I had know that decades ago." As a masters of nutrition student I already know of the countless benefits of essential fatty acids but something about this real life example of how important they are turned a light on for me. Ever since that moment I've been obsessed with making sure I get my essential fatty acids in everyday and now as a pregnant vegan growing my own little one I find it even important and don't go a day without incorporating several types of essential fatty acids into my daily routine.
You might have heard about the omega 3's, 6's, ALA's and GLA's that seem to be the buzz words of the moment? Those are all essential fatty acids or EFAs and can be found in nuts, seeds, blue green algae and variety of other oils and fats. One of my favorite ways to get these EFAs is through ground flax seed and flax oil. Royal Harvest has just come out with a new line of flavored flax oils and super fine ground flax to help fill this need. And when I say super fine this ground flax is feather light and practically dissolves into smoothies, over cereal or into baked goods. It comes in chocolate, which I like to stir into almond milk for a healthy chocolate milk. Coconut flavor, which I put in smoothies and make one mean virgin pina colada with. Caramel, which I drizzle over vanilla ice cream (vegan of course). And lastly, Banana which I either blend into a smoothie with frozen strawberries or drizzle over ice cream to make a healthy version of a banana split. Stay tuned for my virgin pina colada recipe and a giveaway!
Currently, Royal Harvest products are sold online and at select natural food and grocery stores including Hannaford, Shaws, Ea rth Fare, Mom’s Organic Market, Roots Market, Dave’s Marketplace, Feel Rite Fresh Markets, Mrs. Green’s Natural Market, Wild by Nature Market, and Whole Foods Markets in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Florida. Made by Shape Foods, Inc., headquartered in the heart of North American flax country, Royal Harvest Flax Oils and Flax Meal are gluten-free, vegan friendly and Kosher certified. Suggested retail price is $9.99 per bottle and $3.99 per bag.

Vegan Snack Bar Alert! - New Orchard Bars
I can't tell you how many food and energy bars I receive to taste and review for this blog. Typically they're all seeds, twigs and berries and not worth mentioning and nearly always they are so packed with calories that they could almost be considered a meal and definitely not something I would recommend as a snack. Orchard Bards kin of fall outside of the realm of a snack bar or a meal replacement bar and remind me more of a dessert bar of treat. I don't think this was the intention of the company but, for me, the sweet fruity taste of these bars are the perfect treat at the end of the day and a much healthier alternative to my new favorite candy bar - Jokerz (but by no means am I giving my Jokerz up!)
Every Orchard Bar is 100% true to the taste of the flavor on the package. The pineapple macadamia nuts has candied bits of real pineapple pressed with generous slices of macadamia nuts. It's so sugary sweet I could only eat half the bar at a time. Even though it taste like sugar dipped in sugar there are only 18 grams of sugar per bar which is half that of an average 12 ounce can of soda. Plus the Orchard Bar is packed with natural vitamins and minerals and made of real food products, no mystery ingredients on the label. The strawberry raspberry walnut flavor taste exactly like strawberry fruit roll up and the blueberry pomegranate almond taste like a you dipped yourself head first in a blueberry orchard.
My parents were it own when these arrived at my doorstep and became completely obsessed with them. They would ask me everyday where they could buy them but unfortunately the current distribution is quite limited to just a few retailers in the west - check to see if you're near one of the lucky locations here http://orchardbar.com/buy.html Thankfully they are available online - and my parents took full advantage of this stocking up on cases of the bars. Hopefully this great brand will expand to more retailers nationwide soon.
Currently, Liberty Foods (the makers of Orchard Bars) are selling a sample pack of 3 bars for only $2.50 on their website with free shipping so even if they aren't available at a store near you give them a try! http://orchardbar.com/buy.html
